From Tragedy To Purpose: What 7.10 Taught Me About Life

October 7th, 2023, marked a day that forever changed the lives of so many. For Israelis and Jews, it wasn’t just another date on the calendar; it was a powerful reminder of how fragile and precious life truly is. In the wake of tragedy and loss, we are confronted with the undeniable reality that everything can change in a moment.

For me, and countless others, that day underscored a truth we often take for granted: time is limited, and we can’t afford to wait to live fully, love deeply, and chase what matters most. It prompted deep reflection on my own purpose, goals, and how I can guide others in navigating their own journeys. Looking back, this may have been the initial spark for my career change, though I didn’t fully realise it at the time.

In moments of adversity, we are given the opportunity to pause, reflect, and realign ourselves with our core values. The events of October 7th strengthened my determination to pursue a path where I can help others overcome their own obstacles and build meaningful lives. None of us know how much time we have—it’s about making the most of each day, embracing every moment, and supporting others to do the same.

Whenever someone asks me where I’m from, I often hesitate before answering truthfully. In today’s world, you can never be sure if the person you’ve just met holds judgments or biases against Israel or Jews. I do a quick profile scan, assessing whether it feels safe to reveal my roots and identity. This is the reality for many Israelis and Jews. We carry the weight of history, always alert to potential threats, but as I write this, I find myself questioning whether this is simply another limiting belief I hold about myself.

In my life coaching studies, we focus heavily on being fully present and non-judgmental with our clients. I often wonder how I would handle a situation where a client expresses views about Israel or Jews that clash with my own values. Could I set aside my personal beliefs to help that person achieve their goals? Should I steer clear of such situations or see them as an opportunity for growth as a coach? As a life coach, my role is to support the client’s journey without bias or judgment. I suppose time and experience will help me navigate this delicate path.

This tragic day is a powerful reminder that life is short. We should strive to live every day with purpose, compassion, and resilience. If there’s something you’ve been putting off—whether it’s reconnecting with a loved one, pursuing a dream, or making a change—now is the time. Let us honor the lives impacted by this day by choosing to live ours to the fullest.
